A sea trial lasts ninety minutes. You will remember four of them.
You take the boat out, you concentrate on the feel of it, and by the time you are back on the pontoon the numbers have blurred into an impression. The broker asks how it went and you say it went well.
This is not a knowledge problem. You know that maximum rated RPM matters, that exhaust colour matters, that the autopilot should hold a course. What is missing is a sheet in your hand while it is happening.
The Sea Trial Log is a timed recording protocol you run from cold start to return. Every reading has a field, every field has a time stamp, and the whole trial comes back as one document instead of a memory.
šÆ What you record:
- Cold-start behaviour: smoke colour, time to steady idle, unusual sound
- A full RPM-to-speed table across the engine's range, including wide-open throttle
- Operating temperature and oil pressure over a sustained twenty-minute run
- Vibration and noise, logged by source: shaft, steering, rig, hull
- Handling on both tacks, upwind and downwind, with sail settings noted
- Autopilot engagement, course hold and response under load
Instant digital delivery (2026 Captain's Edition). This log records what happened during the trial. It does not interpret the readings ā that conversation belongs to your surveyor, and this document makes it a much shorter one.
